A Skerrick of Green

June 2011 – A Skerrick of Green by Ben Scott

Words and Music by Ben Scott (c) 2011

I took the train from Central in Sydney winter rain
I arrived here monday morning upon the Albury mail
I've spoken now with one or two of the old friends about
The topics of the moment being politics and drought

And the Keifs up in Queensland have lost all their sheep
And everyone is saying that the dry is striking deep
But the country here my girl is about the best I've seen
With the frosty fields still showing a skerrick of green

With prices very high its a rough time to buy a farm
I wish you were here to talk things through 'ere we settle anything
We took a walk round Kylie's which we turned down straight away
But we found a place we're liking which is named Kamilaroi

Where the house is not large looks a little bare and new
It has a wide fireplace that sends the warmth into the room
And the country there my girl is about the best I've seen
With the frosty fields still showing a skerrick of green

Chorus:
And so this note I'll close with my love
To you, but when will you be coming over

Your letter of the 29th I have just now to hand
Saying land price is high and the boom is at an end
But its time our son had something more to occupy his mind
Than the girl who lives at Hicks' farm, she takes up all his time

But the last part of your note my love it made me very blue
You were quite wrong to say I would not change my plans for you
And if you won't live with me then in your way i will not stand
But may God grant that such a course is not what you have planned

Chorus:
And so this note I'll close with my love
To you, but when will you be coming over
And so this note, I ask of you
My faults I will admit, but will you be coming over
