Electronic Press Kit – The Flash Coves

Hailing from the Blue Mountains, NSW, The Flash Coves have performed at festivals and folk clubs across NSW since early 2013, and have individually contributed to the Australian folk scene over decades. This trio of genteel musical mountain-folk have an equal love of original Australian folk songs and curly, stomping tunes from various parts of the world.  They also have more strings between them than you could imagine (even their fiddle has 10) and an equal number of stories to tell, brought forth from the depths of Australian history; flying dogs, lost love in first fleet Sydney, Irish immigration and the simple passion a bearded Australian folk singer has for his coffee. From the comic to the heartfelt, and always involving conversation with the audience, a Flash Coves gig is as nourishing as it is diverse.

Their new release Your Letter Just To Hand (2014), brings to life small moments from Australian history, some monumental, some insignificant.  The stories are at times rendered in lush cello, low whistle and harmony, and at others driven by banjo, fiddle and uilleann pipes.

Ben Scott is a singer-songwriter devoted to the folk music tradition of retelling true stories and experiences in song.  Often drawing directly from historical letters and journals, Ben’s songs reflect the experience of Australian life – its contradictions and tensions, and its lighter moments too.  He has performed with acts ranging from the brass section of Armidale soul stalwarts Maxwell Street to the bearded ranks of choir The Spooky Men’s Chorale, to Fred Smith and a few Spooky Men, to solo gigs to Blue Mountains band Lime and Steel. In recent years Ben wrote and recorded a song for the CD Reclaim Your Voice: Stopping the Punishment of Asylum Seekers, and original soundtrack material for the award winning documentaries ‘Knitting Nanas’ and ‘Throwing Out the Lies with the Birth Water’ and the Atom award winning short film Bullets To Buttons.

Phillipa Freitag is an exponent of the quinton d’amour (a 5 string fiddle with passive drone strings), which perfectly complements her rich chordal playing style. She has performed in the folk scene for many years, having appeared on 1980s recordings by Roaring Jack and the North Bulli Bush Band, and has been a regular member of the Vicary’s Winery Bush Band.  Phillipa is equally at home playing bluegrass tunes or lashing out an Irish jig or reel.

Leigh Birkett is a highly respected multi-instrumentalist from the Blue Mountains, who has expanded from his roots as an accomplished celtic-style guitarist with a love of altered tunings into other stringed instruments such as the bouzouki and mandolin and a diversity of musical genres.  He performs with a range of artists, including a long time collaboration with folk singer-songwriter Martin Doherty, folk singer/multi-instrumenalist, Christine Wheeler, jazz artists Stuart Wakely and Bruce Johnson, world musicians such as musicologist John Robinson and classical violinist Rebecca Daniel.

Of ‘Your Letter Just To Hand’

“Ben Scott’s latest CD is a listening delight. The eleven songs in this collection are all written by Ben. Also included is a traditional jig. The CD begins with two companion songs about a family’s travel experiences in colonial Australia ( A Bullocky’s Girl, Araluen Mountainside). These songs include intriguing detail to gain our interest in these travellers’ story. The travel theme continues with A Skerrick of Green and Two Weeks Off, One Week Home, story songs that share real dilemmas. The latter song is a perceptive take on the situation faced by the ‘fly in, fly out’ worker. But For The Grace is a cleverly written narrative song about the tragic wreck of the Dunbar. The song about Charles Kenny again shows Ben can recognise an interesting tale and skilfully share it in song.

Ben’s ability to create beautifully appropriate and thoughtfully structured tunes is evident throughout. The Wild Unknown is a fine, sensitively written song reminding us that recent history sharply rebukes our country’s current, uncaringly cruel, refugee policy. The poignant His Worn Blue Coat is another example of a very memorable song, both lyrically and melodically. Foxgloves is a delightfully fitting conclusion to this special collection of songs.
